Artist Statement

I'm Liora Karmon.

I see myself as a radio station. I am connected to my surroundings, constantly listening and broadcasting.

Everything that surrounds me is part of me and influences me.

The political and social events around me, in private life as well as on the national and international scene all play a part in this communication.

Living in Israel, I grew up with constant awareness of the conflicts between my country and its neighbors. I've seen my country go through five wars. I follow the media daily, constantly fearing the bad news I might hear.

As a mother to five children who grew up to become soldiers and as an ex-soldier myself for two years, I spent days and nights worrying about their safety and their friends' safety. I cannot be detached.

My creations represent who I am.

Using clay, the potter's wheel and hand building, I create stories and express my opinion. I want to urge my audience to think about these subjects.

I use local motifs like the Finjan (dallah, coffee pot), Mashrabiye (stone decorations), Sabra(a local cactus representing the Israeli born Jew) and more.

I work in series, each series dealing with a specific subject, often coming back to a subject I already dealt with.

I see my current work as that of a story teller, expressing the stories I have to tell in an abstract manner.
